A lot of the confusion, I think, is that there IS a male artist from Canada who also paints under the name "Michele," and whose signature is strikingly similar to that of your mother's. (If you'd be interested in seeing it, let me know, and I'll be glad to post you a photo.) While the male Michele now paints fairly exclusively abstract work, he did, indeed, once do more traditional, though Impressionistic, art. The thing to do to uncover which of these artists one may actually own is to have the artwork properly dated. A painting by your mother would be the older, with the Canadian artist doing most of his traditional work much later than she. I would not, though, simply presume one does not have an original piece of art.
Reading this information about your mother certainly explains some things. I know I have seen counterfeits of her work. The easiest way one can determine whether they have a counterfeited bit of art, in this case, would, again, be to determine the age of the board upon which it has been painted. Those fakes I have seen personally were all done on fairly modern canvas board, which is brighter, lighter, and much more flexible than the ones used during your mother's day.
Take good care,
Linda
