is now on the way.
The French government has announced plans to build the Louvre II, an
offshoot of the famed Paris museum, in northern France as a home for
much of its art now sitting in storage.
Prime Minister Jean-Pierre Raffarin said Monday that Lens, in a
region hurt by the loss of many industrial sector jobs, won the
six-city contest to house the art.
The 236,808 square foot museum will cost about $139 million to
build. It is to feature 500-600 works from the Louvre's reserves.
The European Union will pay for about a fifth of the museum's annual
budget of $13 million to $16 million, with regional and local
governments covering the rest.
The new museum is to open in 2008. |
